UrbanReach is a diversity/cultural competency initiative created by Ms. Lebron in order to support professionals working with inner-city, urban youth from within and outside of the "urban" city walls.
UrbanReach can also work with youth to build positive expereinces through training, facilitated dialogue and activities to foster positive attitudes between urban and suburban/rural youth.
To create positive environments, rich in protective factors where urban youth feel accepted, supported and successful.
How is this Goal reached:
This goal is reached by providing professional development and training in four core areas; Youth Development, Social Class Diversity, Urban Identity, Risk Prevention. Together these four areas encompass a range of issues central to the positive development of urban youth. Training in these areas are available for adult professionals as well as youth from all backgrounds.
1) We must acknowledge the impact of socio-economic factors on child and adolescent development, parenting, and learning; and in acknowledgment of this, we must prepare students to compete in an inequitable society by providing supportive and consistent environments, high expectations, and positive adults relationships.
2)Teen Pregnancy and Teen Parenting are social justice issues, Not (Just) Sex Education Issues.
3)There are so many unknown factors in a person’s life. We must have compassion for those we are responsible for teaching, those who seek our help, and those who offend us.
4)We must continue to give youth opportunities to succeed. Yes.... even after we think they’ve made another poor decision.
